Enrollment: Minimum 6 students | Maximum 12 students, Pre-registration is required at least 1 week prior for this class and for all other classes
Skill Set: Intermediate
Class Description:
In this in-depth two-day workshop, students will be introduced to the ethereal world of painting landscapes using pastels led by award- winning Plein Air painter, Clark Mitchell. This workshop will cover scene selection, sketching, dynamic underpaintings, values, painting versus drawing, and high contrast compositions. Each day will begin with Clark giving a fun and informative talk about using pastels as a fine art medium followed by a demonstration on beginning a landscape with a vibrant underpainting.
After the demonstration, each student will begin working with their chosen landscape. Clark will provide one-on-one guidance to each student. As the painting progresses through the course of the workshop, Clark will then move forward towards intermediate steps on working with the composition from his painting as students progress through their work.
The expectation should not be to come up with a “Finished” painting, but rather to practice the various aspects of creating a landscape while becoming familiar with the medium.
Though this class will have a heavy focus on using pastels, all 2-D mediums are welcome to join.
About the Artist:
Growing up in the shadow of the Rockies, Clark Mitchell discovered a love of the natural world. Given a set of fine old German pastels by his father when quite young, he quickly embraced the medium for its ease of handling, brilliance of color and portability. Through personal exploration as well as study with artists Mitchell has developed the talent to create both tightly rendered scenes as well as looser, more abstract suggestions. He received a bachelor’s degree in art from Colorado College in the seventies and moved to San Francisco to continue his studies at the Academy of Art College. Mitchell then left San Francisco with his partner over thirty years ago and moved north to the beautiful Sonoma County wine country. Mitchell has won many awards for his art, as well as been featured on magazines and journal coveres.
